The Challenges

This new hospital sits on 40 acres high atop a hill. With a budget of over $660 million, the 11 story structure contains approximately 750,000 square feet, 360 patient beds, 12 operating theaters and multiple other suites such as imaging rooms, cath labs, radiology and trauma rooms.

This hospital is designated as the only trauma center in Northern San Diego County.

The hospital was created using sustainable design principles to use minimum amounts of water and electricity and maximum use of recycled and renewable materials. It also features an enhanced healing environment including a vegetative roof over the 2nd floor diagnostics and Testing Wing and terraces with planters on all nursing floors.

BEST Contracting Services was selected to install the thermoplastic, Title 24 compliant roofing systems, the large vegetated roof and other waterproofing systems throughout the facility. BEST also provided and installed standing seam metal roofing, soffits and facia flashing. The largest part of the contract was waterproofing the 80,000 sf (sq ft) “wavy” deck as the area for the green roof was termed. Even though it undulates the substrate is concrete. The green roof assembly consisted of a thick layer of synthetic rubber applied in a hot fluid form over the concrete deck. Drainage mats, and filter fabric were laid over the rubber surface before the engineered soil and plants were added. When installed it was the largest green roof west of the Mississippi.
