Folsom Prison

The Challenges

First opened in 1880, Folsom Prison is the state’s second oldest prison (San Quentin opened in 1852) and is noted as one of the first maximum security facilities and the first to have electricity. Folsom is perhaps best known in popular culture for Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”. The facility currently has an approximate population of more than 2,800 inmates. With a metal fabrication and print shop, inmates manufacture California’s vehicle license plates as part of the vocational program.

BEST was selected to remove and replace exiting roofing and metal deck system. Prior to installing the new roof, the metal decking was replaced using Owens Corning Foamular XPS Rigid Foam Insulation. Centria SRS3 Metal Roof Panel System was then installed over an area of more than 41,000 square feet.
